AAAFund Condemns Rep. Nancy Mace Resolution
Washington, D.C. — The Asian American Action Fund (AAAFund) strongly condemns Representative Nancy Mace’s resolution seeking to eliminate congressional caucuses organized around race, ethnicity, and national origin. This proposal is not about promoting equality. It is an attempt to diminish the voices of communities that have long been underrepresented in our nation’s highest legislative body.
For decades, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) have worked across party lines to ensure the concerns of millions of Americans are represented in Congress. These caucuses have helped advance policies that benefit not only the communities they champion, but the country as a whole, including expanding language access, supporting small businesses, improving healthcare, protecting civil rights, strengthening support for veterans, and creating greater economic opportunity.
As the United States becomes increasingly diverse, Congress should be strengthening opportunities for representation, not dismantling them. Congressional caucuses are voluntary organizations open to Members who share a commitment to addressing issues affecting specific communities. They exist because effective representation requires listening to the experiences of all Americans, and our democracy is stronger when every community has a voice in the policymaking process.
This resolution sends a troubling message to Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, and other historically underrepresented communities: that their experiences and priorities deserve less attention in Congress. That message is wrong.
AAAFund was founded on the belief that our government is strongest when it reflects the diversity of the people it serves. We will continue working to elect leaders who understand the importance of inclusive representation and who are committed to ensuring every community has a seat at the table.
We stand in full solidarity with CAPAC, the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and all Members of Congress who reject efforts to weaken the institutions that have helped expand representation and opportunity in our democracy.
Attempts to diminish representation will not diminish our voices. The Asian American community, alongside every community that has fought for equal representation, will continue to organize, participate, and lead.
