AAA-Fund Endorses Chau and Goyal

Candidates from California and Ohio

Washington DC, May 1, 2008 — The Asian American Action Fund has endorsed Edwin Chau and Jay Goyal in their respective races for U.S. Congress and the Ohio House.

"Chau and Goyal are experienced leaders who have proven they can prevail in the face of long odds," said AAA-Fund Executive Director Gautam Dutta. "We have every confidence in their success," he added.

Chau has a strong shot at unseating GOP Rep. Gary Miller, who represents Southern California's 42nd Congressional District. Chau is currently an elected school board member for the Montebello Unified School District, a mostly Latino district that is the third largest in Los Angeles County. Although the district leans Republican, Chau's experience working across the aisle and the district's large Asian American and Latino population will give him a major boost.

Chau's opponent, Gary Miller, has also been weakened by a reported FBI investigation into his land dealings. Chau faces two challengers in the June 3, 2008 Democratic primary.

Goyal, 27, is running for re-election as state representative in the battleground state of Ohio. In 2006, he was elected to represent the district that includes his hometown of Mansfield — becoming the first Asian American to serve in the Ohio legislature.

Goyal's first term in office has been marked by achievement. He was named "Ohio Young Democrat of the Year" and became the first freshman to serve as ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which is tackling Ohio's home foreclosure crisis.

Although he faces a challenger with fewer ties to the district, Goyal looks forward to a full fledged campaign. He won his first race for office by knocking on 12,000 doors. AAA-Fund first endorsed Goyal in 2006.

The AAA-Fund is a national Democratic political organization whose goal is to increase the voice of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in local, state and federal government, by encouraging AAPIs to volunteer on campaigns, raise money for candidates, and run for political office. In January, the Fund endorsed Ashwin Madia for the U.S. House of Representatives, Swati Dandekar for Iowa State Senate, and Wilma Chan, Paul Fong, and Warren Furutani for the California State Legislature.
